TEAM Lab hosted a webinar on Digital Storytelling. This training was presented by Jena Sussex (Research Assistant) and Dr. Carol Koprowski (Assistant Professor of Preventive Medicine at USC’s Institute for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Research).
Digital storytelling is a combination of the ancient art of storytelling and the modern use of digital media. Digital stories allow users to share their message in the powerful form of a narrative, making it more memorable, forceful, and resonating with their audience. By combining narrative storytelling, photos, movies, and music, creators can disseminate information in one of the most innovative and effective methods of communication-the digital story. Learn what a digital story is, how to get your organization started on creating digital stories, the technology involved, and find out who is already using digital stories successfully in the fields of health care, advertising, communication, non-profit and advocacy groups. This low budget information dissemination tool has the potential to change the way we share information and give meaning to the messages we send. Digital stories are being used by doctors, patients, teachers, students, parents, children, businesses and artists alike, to share information in the compact and memorable format of a story.

Photovoice 2 was presented by Nora Manzanilla, Director of the TARGET Project, in the Office of the Los Angeles City Attorney, Tobacco Enforcement Program. She presented the training in the form of a case study about the TARGET photovoice project. She gave a brief overview of the planning, and then shared their methods for data collection, management, data analysis and dissemination. This training discussed the planned versus the execution of photovoice, as well as lessons learned and strategies, tools and techniques that may be helpful.
This was a follow up to the Photovoice Part 1 webinar that was launched last year (May 12, 2011) and is always available for viewing on TEAM Lab’s website, in the Archived Webinars page.

About Michael Villaire
Michael Villaire, MSLM, is Chief Operating Officer for the Institute for Healthcare Advancement, a nonprofit healthcare public charity dedicated to empowering people to better health, with an emphasis on health literacy. Michael produces the Institute for Healthcare Advancement’s annual Health Literacy Conference. He has written numerous articles and lectures nationally on health literacy. He is co-author of the textbook, Health Literacy in Primary Care: A Clinician’s Guide and the easy to read self-help health book, What To Do When Your Child Is Heavy. He is adjunct faculty at Brandman University, where he teaches a health literacy course for the Master of Science in Health Risk and Crisis Communication program.
His background includes 20 years as an editor in healthcare publishing, including peer-reviewed journals in nursing, hospital publications, physician news magazines, and an online healthcare portal experiment. He has helped redesign and launch several medical and nursing journals and managed the development of a multimedia, interactive curriculum in critical care.
Michael earned his baccalaureate degrees in English and Communications from Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Mich. He earned his Master of Science, Organizational Leadership, and Management from the University of La Verne, La Verne, Calif. His thesis examined health literacy in community clinics in regard to the adequacy of patient education materials.

Video: Social Media Part 2–Advanced Social Media Strategy Webinar** (September 7th, 2011)
Part 2 was presented by Amelia Silbert-Geiger, the CYAN Social Media Coordinator. She discussed a more advanced Social Media strategy that can be implemented by your program/agency to disseminate tobacco education messages to a large audience. She explained how to implement a revised version of the Midwest Academy Strategy Chart, and also provided some examples of how others have been using social media for tobacco control efforts. This is not a beginner’s webinar. This is part two of TEAM Lab’s Social Media series. If you are interested in a more introductory webinar, be on the lookout for an upcoming “how to” training in the near future hosted by CYAN.

Photovoice is an innovative and participatory methodology that can be used to record and reflect the strengths and concerns of a community to reach people in positions of power to make lasting changes.
